Uganda

Uganda has a population of 32 million and is the approximate size of the state of Oregon. Its neighbors are the Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. 50% of its population is in the 0 - 14 age range and the life expectancy at birth is about 52 years. 87% of the population lives in its rural areas where access to safe water and structured sanitation is the exception. There are fewer than 2,300 doctors and 375 dentists to serve the entire country with conditions in rural areas being far worse. English is the official national language with a wide variety of local dialects being spoken. The country is a relatively stable democracy. 84% of the country is Christian and 12% Muslim. Uganda has had a successful HIV/AIDS intervention with prevalance at about 4.1% of the adult population. The main infectious disease challenges, especially for children, are malaria, diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. In Uganda our work is coordinated by our in country HealthyWorld Uganda, Ltd.
